archecker on IDS 11.50 TC3 (windows 32 bits) : tapesize seems forced to 2 Gb
Posted in 2023
Eric Vercelletto tried to check a 93 GB ontape backup from IDS 11.50 TC3 on Windows with archecker, which reported a tape size of 2 GB and asked for another file; changing TAPESIZE in onconfig or AC_TAPESIZE did not help. Mike Walker and Art Kagel suggested AC_TAPEDEV set to STDIO and feeding the file in; others suggested ontape or a bigger VM. Unresolved.

Hi community,
I am helping a customer on rescue operation in this environment (I know, not the best, migration to linux/current version planned within weeks).
Basically extremely severe damage on their storage, IDS server totally exploded, same for their backup media, but they could finally recover some backup files (ontape) on which i am planning to recover some tables with archecker.
The issue is the following:
Context:
the backup file's size is about 93 Gb
When I launch archecker -t -v -s (check backup) the check operation runs fine and it detects a number of tables correctly backed up, but after minutes, archecker asks to 'insert' the next backup file (which I don't have because the backup has only one 93 gb file)
After hitting return, obviously, archecker does not recognize the right file and stopped, which was expected.
After looking well, I noticed that archecker was displaying:
Tape type: Archive Backup Tape
OnLine version: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.TC3
Archive date: Fri May 12 18:08:44 2023
Archive level: 0
Tape blocksize: 16384
Tape size:
2147483647 ( 2gb)
Tape number in series: 1
Now, I understand why archecker end failing, which is because it expects a first file of 2gb (displayed TAPESIZE), although the backup file has a size of 93 gb
So the solution should be to tell archecker that the TAPESIZE is not 2 Gb but either unlimited (0) or some size => 93 Gb.
I tried modifyig the onconfig/TAPESIZE, and retried: same behaviour
Also tried modified the AC_CONFIG file with AC_TAPESIZE: same failure
So: is there a way to tell archecker how to accept a 93 Gb backup file and read it thoroughly ?
Or am I hitting against some limitation of Windows and or 32 bits platform ?
Thanks for your lights/experience
Eric

Hi Eric, It may be a long shot, but you can try setting AC_TAPEDEV to STDIO and then cat the backup file to archecker. I am not sure if that would work or not. The TAPESIZE may be coming from the archive file and not from the Informix config or ac_config. I don't know what the equivalent would be on Windows to cat and pipe, though you may be able to do that in Powershell if that's available to you. ------------------------------ Mike Walker xDB Systems, Inc www.xdbsystems.com ------------------------------
Don't know if it still works this way, but cat-and-pipe on Windows used to work by running the first command to completion saving the output to a temp file then start up the second command with the temp file as stdin. So, it is probably better to just use: archecker .... <archive.file with AC_TAPEDEV set to STDIN and see what happens. ------------------------------ Art S. So if you've got the backup file, why not going the ontape restore route?

Because we have to restore it on another server which has much smaller storage, and better proceed table by table :-) this is preferrably. Original onconfig file said TAPESIZE 0 and archecker says TAPESIZE the exact value of max integer value ( 2,147...767) which is definately not what ONCONFIG says. My point is that if archecker sees TAPESIZE as 2 Gb, it will consider the media file stops at 2gb and it needs more files. Would this value be harcoded ? ------------------------------ [eric] [Vercelletto] [] [Founder] [kandooerp.org] [Pont l'Abbé] [France] [+33 626 52 50 68] Disclaimer: My own opinions are my own opinions and do not reflect on the IIUG, nor any other organization with which I am associated either explicitly, implicitly, or by inference. Thanks Art, Will try Tomorrow. But look at my answer to Andreas Cheers Eric Envoyé à partir de Courrier pour Windows
Just a simple idea, use a bigger Server with more disk space and install the old Windows in a vm. Even virtualbox should do it. That might give you more space for a full restore. Gesendet von Outlook für Android
