backing up large databse
Posted in 2000
A user on IFX 7.30.TC7/NT4 had a 200GB+ blobspace taking over 24 hours and 6 DLT tapes with ontape, and was told ON-Bar can't write a single dbspace/blobspace to more than one device at once. Replies explained the limit is in ON-Bar (one thread per space), not the storage manager: splitting the big blobspace into several smaller spaces (or fragmenting the table across dbspaces) lets ON-Bar run parallel tasks to multiple devices. Other suggestions were a blocking checkpoint plus external backup, tape striping, or using ADSM instead of ISM. No confirmation of what the poster finally did.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have any ideas on this? I have a database that has a
large blobspace over 200Gig and growing. We have used ontape so far
but it's get to long. It's over 24 hours and 6 DLT tapes for a full
backup. I found out from Informix that onbar will not backup a dbspace
or blobspace to more then one device at a time. So now I'm looking for
another solution. Maybe a diffrent storage manager then ISM? Any
ideas will help.
We are running 7.30.TC7 on NT4.
Thanks,
David Donaldson

ISM is NOT the problem. OnBar reads each db/blob space in a single thread
and passes the data to whichever storage manager you are using.
If you can afford to block database access, you could use onbar to set a
blocking checkpoint, use an external method to backup the database, and then
clear the checkpoint.
Alternatively, is there any way to break up the blobspace? Do you really
need to use a separate blobspace for the data? (If it were in the table, you
could fragment the table across multiple dbspaces.)
just my HO.

I'm no expert on onbar, but I thought the main advantage of using it over
ontape was its ability to backup to multiple tape devices in parallel.

But if the SM is the one passing the data to the tape device(s), should
onbar care what or how many devices the data goes to?

No, OnBar is not going to care how the SM stores the data. But, if you
break up the blobspace, you can run a parallel backup which would cause
multiple OnBar tasks to be started (based on $ONCONFIG values). Each task
establishes an independent link to the SM. and passes one dbspace or
blobspace. So, if you can break up your blobspace, you can backup to
multiple devices concurrently.

Can you stripe across the tapes?? Makes a big difference

You may want to try ADSM....I'm backing up ~1.5 Terrabytes in
just about 12 hours using onbar...YMWV on NT using ontape though.
