RE: VarChar

Informix Guide to SQL:Reference VARCHAR(m,r) - stores character sequences that contain single byte and multibyte character sequences of varying length. 'm' is the maximum byte size of the column and 'r' is the minimum amount of byte space reserved for that column. The 'r' option is optional (Department of Redundancy Department) and if not specified, defaults to 0. So, my guess is that Interbase only requires a maximum byte size for the column. In my INFORMIX schema I have some datatypes that are varchar(20,1) The ,1 portion isn't standard. What is it? Do I need it? Can you explain what it does? Does anyone know what the InterBase equivelant would be?
