Summary
A poster asked where to find documentation on RSAM (Random Sequential Access Method), the internal access layer used by OnLine/IDS. Art Kagel replied that none exists: RSAM replaced the C-ISAM library used by Standard Engine and, while it has equivalents of the main C-ISAM functions plus much more, it is proprietary and unpublished. The poster then asked whether low-level, isam.h-style database access must therefore be done via 4GL or ESQL/C; the thread ends without an answer to that follow-up.

There isn't any. The internal RSAM library in OnLine and IDS replaced the
CISAM library that Standard Engine used. The main CISAM functions have RSAM
equivalents, however, as one would expect, the RSAM library is far more
extensive. However, it isn't documented because unlike CISAM, RSAM is
proprietary and not published.

So if I wanted to write a low-level C isam.h-like program to directly control
my interaction with the database, I'd have to do it with 4GL or ESQL/C? (see
related reply in Classics/VIEWING RESULTS BEFORE QUERY COMPLETES...)
