Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
mharolkar asked whether a pure dynamic SQL application, with unknown query and result set, can be written in Perl with DBD/DBI. Steven Wilcoxon said yes: DBD::Informix exposes the selected columns and their types, and the query is just a string. Tony Costa asked about setup and support risk; mharolkar pointed to the DBD-Informix install notes, the source and sample programs.

Sure thing. DBD::Informix has information available on what columns were
selected and the column type. The Query intself is a simple string. You do
need the standard error catching.

Could you possibly offer some help regarding setting up an Informix DBI
DBD configuration?
I want to be able to do this for our programmer, but my recent visit to
the cpan Perl site had much info removed.
Where can I go to read up on this. Also is there any risk to the
production database integrity or will Informix swear off support because
its not "commercial" software??
TIA!

You can refer to the Installation notes that appear with the packages .
http://www.perl.com/CPAN/modules/by-module/DBD/DBD-Informix-0.60.readme
In addition to this if you are familiar with esql/c you can go through
the source. There are some tutorials as well .
See a sample program on the Informix site ..
