No, it's a platform-independant security requirement that prevents an untrusted client from creating a user on their machine ('informix' for example), and connecting to your database server without verification. Some other RDBMSs may handle this by having their own users and passwords independant of the OS, but they'll all have some method of preventing unauthorized access. If you really want users to connect from remote machines with no verification then go ahead and put entries in your hosts.equiv file (or just put a '+' to trust all clients). > > I'm testing Informix on Windows XP Pro workstation for now.
