INFORMIX SOFTWARE AND NEWBRIDGE NETWORKS PARTNER FOR NEXT GENERATION NETWORK MANAGEMENT PRODUCTS Agreement Offers Newbridge Customers Improved Network Performance and Scalability MENLO PARK, Calif. (June 28, 1994) -- Informix Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: IFMX) and Newbridge Networks Corporation (NASDAQ: NNCXF; TSE: NNC) today announced that Newbridge will use INFORMIX(R)-OnLine Dynamic Server(TM) 7.0 as the database core of its key intelligent network management product, The Newbridge(R) 4602 MainStreet(R)Intelligent NetworkStation(TM). Other derivative products are expected to follow. The partnership will allow Newbridge to address the emerging and challenging needs of its customers irrespective of the size and complexity of the managed network. With OnLine Dynamic Server at the center of their network management systems, Newbridge customers will be able to take advantage of enhanced performance, scalability and number of concurrent users over and above that provided by the 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation today. For example, service providers can build large digital infrastructures, rapidly implement new digital services, add new service users, and allow those users to manage their virtual private network from control terminals situated on their own premises. "OnLine Dynamic Server will form a core part of the 4602 MainStreet infrastructure," said Douglas Somers, Newbridge vice president of Network and Service Management. "It will allow us to transition to the coming generation of networks, which will make use of multiprocessing environments, offer digital services on demand and rely on very large databases. In our eyes, this is a long-term relationship," he added. "The flexibility and scalability of INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server will enable us to respond to customers' changing network management needs." "This agreement puts Informix on the front lines of the trend toward very large distributed, database management systems," added Steve Sommer, vice-president of marketing for Informix. "A long term partnership with Informix will provide Newbridge with the database technology necessary for adapting to the constant growth and change that characterizes its customers' businesses." The Informix and Newbridge Partnership "It was important for Newbridge to find a partner that understands our business model and can adapt to it," said Somers. "Informix is willing to work with Newbridge in a way that allows us to address our critical business issue of providing customers with flexibility, responsiveness and room to grow." For example, Informix plans to adapt its per-user pricing model for the deal to reflect the Newbridge pricing methodology. "We also sought a partner that would work with us in developing its technology to meet our future needs," Somers added. "Informix is certainly the right partner in this respect." Newbridge Network Management Technology The Newbridge 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation is a powerful and flexible management system that allows one or more operators to control and monitor circuit-switched and packet-switched networks (including Frame Relay, X.25 and ATM) of any size from single or multiple locations. Informix Database Technology INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server, which will serve as the foundation of 4602 MainStreet, is based on the company's next-generation, multithreaded, parallel-processing database architecture, Dynamic Scalable Architecture(TM) (DSA). In order to handle larger databases with improved processing performance, DSA was designed to provide parallel processing as a core capability. This core internal parallelism enables OnLine Dynamic Server to achieve superior performance by processing database tasks in parallel and maximizing the use of multiprocessor hardware. DSA is designed to exploit all the hardware capabilities available on the open systems market, including uniprocessor, symmetric multiprocessor (SMP), loosely coupled clusters and massively parallel processors. OnLine Dynamic Server is also a powerful multimedia database that can store and retrieve large, unstructured data types known as BLOBS, (i.e. images, audio, video, large documents) along with conventional data, as an integral part of the database.
