We are having the following problem: on a customer site the connection from Windows 95 and Windows 98 PC's to the Informix Online Dynamic Server Workgroup Edition, version 7.30.TC7 (compliant with SP4 on Windows NT 4.0) is taking about 15 (fifteen) seconds... The server and the Client PC's have the following configurations: Hardware: - Server: - Compaq Proliant (I'm not at the customer site, but it's a 1500 or a 3000 model, I'm not sure), with 15 GBytes free on a disk dedicated to IDS WG 7.30.TC7 (including DBSpaces, Informix Dynamic 4GL 2.10.TC2 runtime and our application): - 256 Mbytes RAM - 2 Compaq SCSI-2 Controllers - At least 2 SCSI Disks - 2 Pentium II processors (450 Mhz) - Clients: - Standard Pentium PC's with Windows 95 and Windows 98 Software: - Server: - Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, with Service Pack 4 (it also serves also as DHCP Server, and I think it's a Primary Domain Controler) - Informix Dynamic Server, Workgroup Edition, 7.30.TC7 - Informix Dynamic 4GL 2.10.TC2 (runtime) - Our application (compiled with Informix Dynamic 4GL 2.10.UC2 on a SCO OpenServer machine) - Shared folder with: - Sub-folder for Informix Dynamic 4GL 2.10.TC2 - Sub-folder for the application - Clients: - Informix Connect bundled with Informix Dynamic Server, Workgroup Edition 7.30.TC7 (I'm not sure about the version but I think it uses ESQL/C version 9.xx) - They connect to the domain on logon. - They map the network drive to the folder shared on the NT server. - INFORMIXSERVER is set to the IDS Server on the NT server (via setnet32) - The adress of the NT server is on the C:\\WINDOWS\\HOSTS file - The number of the service used by IDS is on the C:\\WINDOWS\\SERVICES files (turbo 1526/tcp) - INFORMIXSQLHOSTS is set to \\\\name_of_the_nt_server (via setnet32) - INFORMIXDIR is set (via c:\\autoexec.bat) and %INFORMIXDIR%\\bin is on the path (also via autoexec.bat) - IP adress is dynamic, using the DHCP protocol. Our problem: - On the NT server the connection to the server is instantly (via ILOGIN or the application) - On the Cliente PC's, every connection takes about 15 (fifteen) seconds (via ILOGIN or the application), but: - If I try to ping the NT server on a Client PC (via MS-DOS prompt, using "ping aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd), it takes less than 10 ms. - If I try to set INFORMIXSQLHOSTS blank or to \\\\pc_client_name the connection time is still the same. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Vitorino Ribeiro SINFIC - Sistemas de Informa''o Industriais e Consultoria, SA http://homepage.esoterica.pt/~sinfic sinfic@esoterica.pt

Check where is your poll thread is running. By default he's running on the CPU vp, that recommended for better perfomance. But if you have hard calculations, sometimes it's better to move it to the NET vp. 2. If you have more than 100 users, configure additional interface in your SQHOSTS file - it reduces load for poll thread. 3. Check if you have PDK and BDK on the same network in the WinNT environment. With PDK and associated to him BDK it takes more time to connect to NT maschine. 4. Try to connect to NT maschine as Win user and check connect time - probably slow connection is NT problem, not Informix.
