Raw or block devices?

Managing a lot of chunks using raw devices is a hard job, so what kind of disk setup you recomend for better performance? Is pointing chunks to block devices a better alternative? Or another setup? Do you recomend using LVM or pointing links direct to the devices (/dev/disk/by-id)? best regards
In most cases?.... filesystem without journaling and with direct_io set.
