7.31.UD4 Max Size

Hi, We are currently having a huge disagreement as to the 4TB max size limit and request your expertise in this manner. We have 3 instances running on a Sun box with 3 SAN's attached. Each SAN has 4 TB of space available. Our instances are .5 TB, 1.0 TB and 1.75 TB in size, for a total of 3.25 TB. Are we going to hit the 4 TB limit combined or does each instance have a 4TB ceiling? Thanks in advance, Sam
Hi, the 4 TB limit is caused by a maximum number of 2048 chunks (maximum size 2 GB each) for one IDS 7.x instance . Therefore every single instance is limited to 4 TB but there is no limit on the combined size of instances. If you have a lot of small chunks you may be limited to a size less than 4 TB. With IDS 9.4 the maximum number and size of chunks is higher. The 4TB limit for 7.xx is per instance not total for the host machine so you have lots of headroom unless your chunks are very small. The other limit you can run into is the limit of 2047 chunks per instance (at 2GB per chunk that's where the 4TB limit comes from) if you have lots of small chunks you will be limited to less than 4TB. If you need more space per instance than 4TB you'll have to upgrade to 9.40 or 10.xx which allow more larger chunks upping the instance size to 128 Petabytes. Art S. Thanks to all for the input. We have a tired old optical sub-system that we are moving the data from to a SAN and wanted to be sure that we would not run out of room. --Sam
