As a f'rinstance, Obnoxio The Clown wrote: > Didn't I just say that? Yes, but his news server hadn't shown that response in time. Although we now have nice modern high-speed networking which masks the effects a lot of the time, the news system is asynchronous and the data spreads to different news servers at different speeds. In the bad old days, it would take days (literally; there were nightly phone calls set up to collect the news from the next site up the chain) for the original message to reach the other side of the world, and it was entirely understood that someone might answer the question at the same time as you, or even after you, simply because they had not also seen your answer. It pays to remember that this effect can still happen, albeit somewhat less obviously because of the high speed of the modern internet. And then there are the occasions when someone (eg me; however, I have read the available answers and noted that this "Didn't I just say that" actually didn't trigger an avalanche of follow-ups) does not read all the postings on a subject before chipping in their two cents worth. Mostly I read what I can see on the subject before responding, but occasionally I get over-excited and respond too soon -- and I doubt if I'm alone. Please, please, please, stop the stupid flame-fests and comment-fests arising from someone else saying more or less the same thing as you at the same time you did. They are a waste of my time. Now, if you want to send me into exile (after 10 years or more on the news group), that's fine, but I'm really getting rather fed up with distinguishing the larky comments like "Didn't I just say that" and the follow-ups from the serious material. I don't mind the occasional joke or whatever - heck, they keep the place interesting. But continually doing this is irritating. I'm not picking on the Obnoxious Clown in particular (though he's provided me with a concrete example of the problem, and is certainly one of the offenders); there are a number of people who do it, and I'd like to say "Cease and Desist" to all of you. -- Yours, Jonathan Leffler (Jonathan.Leffler@Informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h> Guardian of DBD::Informix v1.00.PC1 -- http://www.perl.com/CPAN "I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it!"
