Views in Informix pre v7.3

Hi folks, I'm currently making views which were created in Informix v7.31, pre v7.3 compliant. One function I use a lot is the 'DECODE' function. I'm just wondering if 'DECODE' was a new function introduced in v7.3? If this function does not exist in pre v7.3 versions of Informix, does anyone know a similar function? Also, can someone give me a brief outline as to the syntax to create a view in versions of Informix pre v7.3. Thanks, Michael.
