What is the meening of light append in Informix? Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Learn what you don't.
In short: When loading data to a table it normally passes through the buffer pool. There is a certain amount of overhead involved with this operation (locking LRU queues, buffer headers, buffer pages, etc). When using load utilities like HPL (IDS) or X-Loader (XPS), the system can "bypass" the buffer pool. The data page for the new row is built in the virtual portion of shared memory. Along with this, the loader will grab new extents from the table's DBSpace and place the new data pages within them. Finally, once the load process is complete, the extent is "added" onto the real table. This is known as a "Light Append". There is obviously a bit more to it, but I would suggest reading the Informix Docs.
