Anyway, on this issue of New Era, I tend to agree on what has been said, by both Informix employee. Like some has pointed out, a new product tends to take some time to mature, which is common in this industry, like the MS WIndow 2.0 example that one quoted so appropriately. We also know how long it takes this product to be developed and official announced, and how often the specs has been changed in the process. For one thing, I'm glad that it is released, though I am not so sure of its maturity (just doubts of all new product, especially version 1 product), at least I know what to expect. On the other hand, New Era, being a product whose specs are evolved from existing requirements, and built with the expertise of one who brought to us one of the best, most robust 4GL, I do not doubt the sales person's statements that it is of another class, form PC products such as PowerBuilder, SQL WIndows and the like, warranting that kind of pricing. Indeed, like any development tool, it is actually the 3rd party tools and addd-ons that determines the products popularity, and usefulness. The best example that I always like to quote, Visual Basic, who would think that Basic would actually be used the development tool of choice by so many programmers? I, for one, don't believe it, and am still not convinced, but it is in fact being used by so many programmers to develope things I couldn't begin to imagine. NewEra, I think has a pretty good start in that, 3rd party add-ons, tools, libraries, is encouraged and provided right from the start. This certainly make it a very flexible, yet powerful tool for development, and maintenance. In short, I do think NewEra is a formidable product, and is worth looking at, though it would need time to mature. > Growing more worried all the time, > rodney > So, stop worrying.
