Just two tries: Maybe it's the terminal setting, as far as I remember the some of the special characters in the international charset are replaced by the german special chars (e.g. | is replaced by '). There might by a change code setting along with the terminal. Could also be the setting of the environment variable LANG. For Germany it should by De_DE.88591.
