I think I had to send an initialization string to the printer (gleaned from the printer manual), which was a special printer which could print lots of different types of Bar Codes as well as ordinary text, the number I wanted encoded, followed by another string to put the printer back into text mode. It also had postioning strings etc. At the time I was using ACE to generate the output file! -- Sally Woolrich
