term type for dbaccess?
Posted in 2014
Problem: in dbaccess on CentOS 6.4 / Informix 12.1, the arrow keys don't move the highlight in the table Modify screens (and 'enter' then gives "The highlight must be on a value when you select Modify"), regardless of whether PuTTY or WRQ Reflection is used. Suggestions offered: use TERM=scoansi with PuTTY's SCO keypad mode (symlinking scoansi to ansi under /usr/share/terminfo if missing), or TERM=xterm with INFORMIXTERM=terminfo, or vt220/vt100 with TERMCAP=terminfo, plus toggling keypad application mode and using letter keys/space bar to move the highlight. The poster tried all of these and posted his full environment (TERM=scoansi, TERMCAP pointing at $INFORMIXDIR/etc/termcap), but the thread ends there with no resolution recorded.

Topics: Server Administration, Platform-Specific Issues
I've noticed on our system that when designing new tables using dbaccess that
the console doesn't react as I would expect. For example, if I go to Modify,
the up/down buttons don't change the highlighted field. Is there a certain
terminal type I should be using, or some other environment variable I need to
set?
The server is running Linux (Centos 6.4), Informix 12.1. I've tried connecting
via putty using xterm and via WRQ Reflection using 'Linux Console', but they
seem to have the same result.
Is there some sort of standard terminal type that dbaccess requires to
function properly?

If you are using Putty then use the scoansi setting and you should be good
with the TERM as scoansi. If you are using termcap then scoansi should be
there, some Linux distro don't seem to have scoansi under terminfo so just
link ansi to scoansi under /usr/share/terminfo

Hi,
xterm should be ok, make sure you have
export INFORMIXTERM=terminfoenvironment set.
Also check your env for TERM variable. Should be xterm.

Set putty to use vt220, set TERM=vt220 or vt100, set TERMCAP=terminator

I've tried the suggestions from Paul, Marcus, and Art, but none of them seem
to work as I would expect. Can someone confirm that these key sequences do
what I think they should do?
dbaccess dbname[enter]
[right arrow][right arrow][right arrow][enter]
[enter]
test[enter]
[enter]
[enter]
asdf[return][return][return][return][return][return]
fdsa[return][return][return][return][return][return]
jkl[return][return][return][return][return][return]
[control-c]
[right arrow][enter]
[down arrow]
After this, I would expect the column name 'fdsa' to be selected, and pressing
[enter] would allow me to re-name it. Right now, everything seems to work fine
until I press [down arrow], which seems to do nothing (asdf is still
highlighted). To top it off, if I then press [enter], instead of being
prompted to re-name the column, I get the error "The highlight must be on a
value when you select Modify".

Try changing the keypad mode to/from application mode. You can also select
menu choices with a letter and move the highlight with the space bar.

I don't appear to have a scoansi. I do have an ansi, so I linked scoansi ->

I don't see an option in putty to change to/from application mode on-the-fly.
I did try changing "Initial state of cursor keys" and "Initial state of
numeric keypad" to 'Application' instead of 'Normal', then opened a new
session with those settings with no distinguishable difference.

WRQ Reflection - i usee term type vt102 in environment TERM=vt100 TERMCAP=/opt/informix/etc/termcap this is on RHEL
Try setting TERMCAP=terminfo because some of the special keys aren't defined in the termcap file. Art Art S. I tried with Reflections with a termcap, and the down arrow still doesn't work.
Without the termcap (TERMCAP=terminfo), the down arrow also does not work.
Interestingly, the down arrow does seem to work on the menus (it goes to the
previous/next page), just not on the bottom grid.

I reached out to a third party support to look at this, and the tech was able
to duplicate the issue within the 12.10FC1 virtual appliance. It seems to be a

For anybody interested, I opened a PMR with IBM, PMR# 14038,227,000.
