We are currently working with >printer specific PCL embedded in 4gl code. We used to put the printer control codes for these things into a database table. Then in the report we select them into variables and print those to control the printer. Now we use our own generic printer control codes in the 4GL report and pipe this through a simple filter written in C that translates the codes into whatever the printer needs. There are clear limits to what can be done in this way, but at least we do get quite nice looking reports. The print filter isn't difficult to write, and there may allready be some available. One day we may also make our own available. Don't wait for it though.
