I think I need a DB with no shared memory

Whilst installing DBD::Informix, I encountered the following problem
bash-2.03# esql -o esqlbasic esqlbasic.ec
bash-2.03# ./esqlbasic
$DBI_DBNAME unset - defaulting to 'stores'.
$DBD_INFORMIX_DATABASE unset - defaulting to 'stores'.
Testing connection to stores
SQL: -25588: The appl process cannot connect to the database server
shm_on.
ISAM: 4: Interrupted system call
You cannot use stores as a test database.
You do not have sufficient privileges.

*** Your Informix environment is not usable
*** You must fix it before building or testing DBD::Informix
The following is in the README under 'what I need'.
A 'stores' database to which you can connect without specifying username
or password and in which you can create tables. Ideally, the connection
should not use shared memory (neither olipcshm nor onipcshm), and you
should have DBA privileges in the database.
I believe that the problem lies here as stores is created on shm_on.
The following is what is in the /apps/informix/etc/sqlhosts file
demo_on onipcshm on_hostname on_servernamedemo_se seipcpip se_hostname sqlexec
shm_on onipcshm cracker cracker_shm
tli_on ontlitcp cracker cracker_on
Am I doing something wrong here??

1. I never build DBD::Informix as root; it'll work, but I don't do
it. Install as root - sometimes. Build - no.
2. Which version of Linux are you using? Or, if not Linux, which
version of which o/s on which platform? Which version of ESQL/C,
Perl, DBI, DBD::Informix, IDS? (I know you told me, but others
don't know, and the information is important.)
3. Have you been able to connect to your database using DB-Access
or any other ESQL/C program on your machine?
The INFORMIXSERVER variable controls which connection is used; you
should aim to use tli_on as some of the DBD::Informix tests use
multiple connections, and you're only permitted one shared memory
connection. OTOH, DBD::Informix will compile and test OK if you only
have shared memory connections; it adapts to that situation.

Is tli_on an alternative name for the same IDS instance as shm_on?
If so, use it (as the value for $INFORMIXSERVER). Is the IDS instance
configured to support both shared memory and network connections?
Whaat are the values set for DBSERVER (DBSERVERNAME?) and
DBSERVERALIASES? What are the values set for NETTYPE? If the two
servers (shm_on and tli_on) are different instances on the same
machine, then you can still use shm_on but the multi-connection tests
won't run - they recognize that you only have shared memory
connections and skip the testing.

At the moment, you have a basic connectivity problem - something is
not working right. The error message you're getting is not very
helpful, though. Once you can get esqlbasic to connect to your
database server, you are likely home and dry. Is the database
instance running on your local machine, or is it on a remote system?
