That will work, but the preferred owner is informix, not root.
And, in future versions, the directory permissions will be 1775 (no
public write permission). The only people who might conceivably be
inconvenienced are those who use 'private installs' of IDS. Those
people have some explaining to do, though - why haven't they reported
that the official install process for a private install is broken, and
has been for all of the current millenium (since 9.20.UC1, anyway).

It would also be worth checking the permissions on oninit (should be
root:informix:6754 unless you've got enough knowledge to know how to
vary the permissions and what the implications of doing so are).
