In order to avoid all the usual bottleknecks associated with web processing tho, you would probably still need to put the database on a seperate box from your web server. Client loads of ~100/sec and up would have the tendency to really drag the server down if you have all the CGI/web threads/Sybase threads and their associated file I/O all in the same box.
