Help on onbar
Posted in 2009
After a disk crash, a user restored an IDS 9.40 instance with ON-Bar; everything came back except the dbspace holding the logical logs (left in ND/PD state), so the server wouldn't start, and 'onbar -r bddlogs' did nothing. bar_act.log showed XBSA "Backup object does not exist in Storage Manager", suggesting the log dbspace was never backed up or the restored ixbar.<servernum> file was the wrong version. Suggestions included calling IBM's Down Systems Group and extracting tables with archecker, but IBM declined support on the out-of-maintenance 9.40 release, so the user rebuilt from scratch using dbexport files, with some data loss.

Anyone online at this moment?
I'm traying to recover from onbar, as the root dbspace and a data
dbspace where lost when a disk crashed.
I did an onbar -r and all of the dbspaces were recovered but the
dbspace dedicated to logical logs.
online can't be started becaus of Logical Log File not found error.
If I try to onbar -r bddlogs it does not do anything..
the binaryes directory of informix where lost and I recoverit from
backup and copy on it all of the administrative files for ontape, which
were backed up with the onbar -b -L 0 backup.
Can I force to recover from bddlogs or do anything to fix the problem.
Thanks in advance.

Difficult to say what's wrong w/o any diagnostics.
What are the dbspace flags after you restored the instance ? What does
bar_act.log tell you ? online.log ?
It might be the logical restore (rollforward of logs ) did not happen
for whatever reason ?
Check bar_act.log and maybe the storage managers log files.

Hello. Thanks for the answare.
The flags are like this:

Hi,
could there be a problem with the ixbar.<servernum> file
in the $INFORMIXDIR/bin directory? I.e. that this file has
not been restored to the correct version and for that the
needed backup of the logdbspace has not been found
for restore?
Of course there is a small chance that the log dbspace
was not backed up in a long time and this has gone
un-noticed? (As ON-Bar generally allows backup of
individual dbspaces, there normally is no check for
completeness - unless you do whole system backups.)
Regards,
Martin

If the logical log dbspace is the one that couldn't be recovered, then there
is a good chance that IBM will be able to recover your instance for you. Do
not touch the instance or disk chunks and DO NOT overwrite or lose that
latest onbar archive!
Call tech support and get to the Informix Down Systems Group. There are
several options they may have to help you.
The only thing you can try yourself would be to use archecker to extract
from the onbar archive every table for each of your databases into flat
files or into a new database server in a clean instance.

Thanks a lot Art. The fact is IBM argue can't do anything because of
version 9.40 is out of maintenance.
Anyway we start recovery from scratch and dbexport files. Whith some
lost.

The archecker should be able to extract the lost tables directly from the
onbar archive using its tabel level restore capability! I don't remember
for certain if that feature was included in the 9.40 version of archecker or
was first available in 10.00, but IB that the more recent archecker versions
will read an older version archive anyway. [Just double checked and table
level restore using archecker was first introduced officially in IDS 10.00 -
if it works in the 9.40 version it was undocumented then.)
