WORDWRAP [COMPRESS]
Posted in 1992
I've finally got a good opportunity to use the (relatively) new WORDWRAP feature, but as I try it out, I can't seem to get it to do what I want. I want to be able to print this field as multiple lines on a report, so it seems to me that I want WORDWRAP without COMPRESS: "If you omit COMPRESS, all blanks are retained in the variable, even editor blanks, and the contents of a variable reflect its multiline display. For example, a report could duplicate its appearance by printing successive substrings the width of a display segment." (4-60 of 4GL reference). Sounds like just what I want. And if I set up the form this way, and enter [line 1 ] [line 2 ] [line 3 ] the field gets just the value I expected, and prints on the report just fine. BUT when I call the entry up again, it appears on screen as [line 1 line 2 line 3] [ ] [ ] I.e. it visually compresses the blanks on screen, even though they're there in the database! This ruins the correspondence between what's on screen on what's in the report :-( Is this a bug, or am I missing something? If I do specify WORDWRAP COMPRESS, then it works the way I would expect, and, as advertised, what I get on the report doesn't match the screen. Is there any way to get a 1-to-1 matching? This is all with 4.10.UC1 on a Sun4 ... Thanks for any tips! -- Harry Bochner bochner@das.harvard.edu
