Release migration only
Posted in 2009
A DBA wanted to roll an instance back from IDS 11.50.FC4 to 11.50.FC3, but the older engine refused to start ("Cannot bring server up from a higher version server"), and onmode -b appeared to offer only older major versions. Replies noted onmode -b 11.50.xC3 does work (one user did it, though with sysadmin/AUS errors afterwards), that compression must be removed before reverting, and that onmode -b to 11.10 would also allow FC3 to boot. In the end the poster skipped the downgrade: the real issue was one slow, lock-prone database, fixed by returning its dbspace to a 2KB page size, with Art Kagel explaining that larger pages help indexes and wide/high-locality tables but can hurt delete-heavy OLTP tables.

Hello!
We´re trying to revert an 11.50.FC4 instance to 11.50.FC3 release,
but when trying to start the FC3 engine, the server returns a message:
"Cannot bring server up from a higher version server"
Is there anything missing, because the "onmode -b" application only
brings the previous versions, not 11.50...
If someone did this, and could help us, would be great!
Regards.

That is wierd...
I already test successfully here on development environment the downgrade from
11.50 UC4 to 11.50 UC3 , and works fine , except some errors on sysadmin what
I don't try to resolve yet... but the database is online and accessible.
$ onmode -b 11.50.xC3This will make all necessary modifications to disk structures
so that the IBM Informix Dynamic Server space will be compatible with
INFORMIX-OnLine Version 11.50.xC3
Do you wish to continue (y/n)? y
REVERSION: No reversion needed to 11.50.xC3.
Install 11.50.xC3 before reinitializing OnLine.

Did you experiment with compression while you were using 11.50.FC4?
If so, you must manually remove all the compression before reverting.
Check the release notes very carefully.

No, we didn´t implement any new feature of FC4, but I´ll try to run the
reversion utility passing the 11.50.xC3 argument,
on our test machine.
In case of any new scoop, I´ll post it here.
Thanks a lot for your attention.

Use onmode -b to revert to 11.10 then you will be able to bring up the
11.50FC3.
What problems have you had with the .FC4 release? I'm sure all of us would
like to know.

Mr Art, actually we convinced the managers not to reverse our version,
because there was only one database with speed troubles, and tables locked.
We´ve made a reversion on it´s dbspace page size (returning it to the
old 2Kb size),
and now the app is running smooth, according to its manager.
His app is java-made, using JDBC to connect on a pool-conexion basis.
I´ve already found some transactional errors, but I still don´t know if
he made the corrections for the topics I suggested.
We´re extremely happy now, because the app is running smooth, according
to him.
But I´ll control his querys mainly on the transaction systems, to know
if there´s any app error still, as usual.
Thanks a lot for your interest and help.
Regards!

Alexandre,
Thanks for the update. Wider pages are almost a win for indexes but for
table data it's a mixed bag that has to be carefully thought through and
planned. For tables with good locality (many active rows reside on each
page) and for tables with rows wider than a page larger pages are usually a
win. Many transactional systems do many deletes which reduces locality and
for those tables, performance is adversely affected by larger pages.
