SMI - indexes and statistics

Hi all, I already see some some scripts where the people run update statistics over the SMI tables (tabid <= 99) and others create indexes for some tables, like sysusers... Is there a real advantage execute some of this actions? Or is just useless overhead to database ? Regards Cesar
Tables with tabids <= 99 are not SMI tables, they are system catalog tables. -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Cesar Inacio Martins Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2011 7:52 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: SMI - indexes and statistics [23483] Hi all, I already see some some scripts where the people run update statistics over the SMI tables (tabid <= 99) and others create indexes for some tables, like sysusers... We run update stats high on systabauth (grantee), even though grantee doesn't lead an index - On some of our systems this table has many hundred thousand records ... Since it doesn't lead an index my utility to do the update stats doesn't pick it up so it's hardcoded in ... If your system has many individual "grantors" (ours doesn't), you might want to update stats high on it also. Yes, if you have many objects in your database maintaining stats on the
catalog tables can improve performance for some queries and for any app that
queries the catalogs directly like dbschema and dbaccess.
