Should I reinstall the informix software from cd or could we just take it up with a tar or ufsdump or something and lay it down on the new server? Our desire is to move the environment exactly as is changing only those things that must be changed...

Reinstall. The installtion can create files in /usr/lib and
/etc/informix as well. Better to reinstall.
1. Install Informix on new server.
2. Copy sqlhosts and onconfig to new host.
3. Update sqlhosts with new host name.
4. Recreate empty instance on new server with same config and
dbspaces/chunks.
5. Level 0 archive on old machine
6. Shutdown Informix intance on the new machine.
7. Restore Level 0 archive
8. onmode -m to bring new server online.
9. Make sure application works.
10. Repeat 5-9 on go live day.
Easy!
