RAID
Posted in 2016
Larry asked how to lay out disks on new hardware for Informix 11.70 on Solaris 10 running a mixed OLTP/OLAP workload: two internal disks in RAID 1 for the root/OS partition and the data on a RAID 10 array. Art Kagel confirmed this matches best practice for a simple configuration, and on HBAs the advice was simply to use redundant adapters to eliminate single points of failure. When Larry later asked for arguments against RAID 5 for database storage, Art and Lester Knutsen pointed him to www.baarf.com (Battle Against Any Raid Five), which collects papers by Kagel, Cary Millsap, Juan Loaiza (Stripe and Mirror Everything) and James Morle.

I can't believe I don't have the previous responses saved somewhere; however, I don't. I am running Solaris 10 and Informix 11.70. I am getting new hardware and have the option of having it set up as I dictate. I thought I remembered that it is best to have two internal disks in RAID 1 that will hold the root partition, and then having the data in a disk array set up as RAID 10. Is this still the case, or is there a better recommended configuration? The database is a combination of OLTP and OLAP. Larry
For a very simple configuration, yes, that would align with best practice. Art Art S. Yes. Other than having redundant adapters, I am not really sure what you can do, or even if there is anything else to do. Go to www.baarf.com. There you'll find links to papers from me, Cary Millsap (Hotsos), Juan Loaiza (Oracle - originator of the SAME concept: Stripe and Mirror Everything), and James Morle (Oracle). James's papers may take some searching because Oracle keeps taking them down and he keeps finding new places to post it. In addition, under the <members> link you'll find that many members' entry blurbs include a short horror tale. Art Art S.
