rootdbs chunk rights
Posted in 2016
The poster migrating from IDS 11.50 to 11.70 on AIX 7.1 found that the new instance would only start if the rootdbs chunk had 600 permissions, whereas 11.50 required 660. Art Kagel and Paul Watson explained that 660 (owner/group informix) is correct for a normal root install, while 600 is required for a non-root/private install, suggesting the 11.70 install wasn't registered as privileged. Jonathan Leffler recommended checking ownership/permissions under $INFORMIXDIR and running 'onsecurity -v $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit'. The poster later reported the issue was fixed by reinstalling IDS into the same INFORMIXDIR.

hello to all i'm trying to migrate from 11.50 to 11.70 (on aix 7.1) and i noticed this : - when i start the instance on 11.50 the rootdbs chunk must be 660 - when i start it on 11.70 it must be 600 can anyone tell me why ? thanks in advance
For all versions the chunks should be owned by informix and group informix and have 660 privileges. I don't know why you are seeing different behavior. Was the 11.70 software installed by "root"? You should be using a root installation. Art Art S. yes with root for both installation, i don't understand why 11.70 need the 600 for the rootdbs chunk
Unless you are using a non-root install in which case you need 600 Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Art Kagel Sent: Monday, February 01, 2016 11:32 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: rootdbs chunk rights [36463] For all versions the chunks should be owned by informix and group informix and have 660 privileges. i installed both bersions with root, but now it works under 11.70 with 600 can do you think i can continue or there'll be a problem with it ?
If you've got a private install according to Informix but you were expecting a regular (privileged) install, you've got some problems ahead of you. Informix should not be insisting on 600 permissions unless it thinks you've got a private install. So, you should check permissions generally under $INFORMIXDIR. Is everything owned by the correct user/group? If you're sure that the permissions on the software is all correct and owned by informix or root and belongs to group informix, then it is troubling if the system is still demanding 600 permissions; it should be demanding 660. Consider running the command: onsecurity -v $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit Its output may give you some enlightenment on what's going on.
