Under close >> examination, NewEra _is_ 4GL. Not really. The structured programming language of NewEra is identical to 4GL. However, object-oriented, graphical programming is a whole new world. 4GL programmers will like NewEra because they are already familiar with parts of the language, but NewEra is NOT 4gl. You will need training, and it will take time to learn GUI and object-oriented programming. To illustrate, let's look at some code. This code obtains a customer name from the database and displays it to a screen field. DATABASE sports SELECT company INTO p_company FROM customer WHERE customer_id = 101 DISPLAY p_company TO f_company Everything in the above 4GL code could be used in NewEra except the DISPLAY statement. However, using statements like DATABASE and embedded SQL is NOT the right way to do OO programming in NewEra. Now let's look at NewEra: CALL ixSQLConnect::getImplicitConnection.connect("sports") LET myWindow = getWindow() CAST customerWN SELECT company INTO p_company FROM customer WHERE customer_id = 101 CALL myWindow.companySF.setText(p_company) Quite different, huh? I could have really made it interesting by calling ixSQLStmt functions instead of using an embedded SELECT, but I don't want to scare you too much. In other words, NewEra is different and more complex, but it is also more powerful and more fun. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Randall Rhea Systems Engineer Informix Software randall@informix.com
