Thun,
First, the Informix consultant is always right. Informix only employs totally
infallable professionals ;-)
Get your hands on the C.D.I. FAQ and go out and buy Elizabeth Suto's book. Take
the time to read thru these references well. The more you read, the easier the
whole process becomes. I take it you already have the Fine Manuals.
Hints, consider CREATEing a CLUSTERED INDEX on the tables affected. This
actually makes a copy of the table (minus the multiple extents) as long as
enough contiguous space is available for it. Remember to drop the CLUSTERED
INDEX after this operation and to check that there's enough space for the copy
beforehand.
You could also tbunload and tbload (?) the database. This compresses the
extents so that they are treated as 1 extent. It takes more time and you would
have to drop your database before tbloading it (this should be a scary
operation for a new DBA). If you go this way, make a level 0 Archive also, if
only to make you feel more confident.
If you know your database well and have the time, consider doing a complete
dbexport (depending on what percentage of the database is affected) and then
dbimport it. Save the locklevel by ...
select tabname, locklevel from systables where tabid >99
This gives you all the locklevel information excluding (where tabid >99)
informix catalog tables. The advantage of doing the dbexport/dbimport is that
the complete database gets re-created and you can rest assured that it is in
good shape. Before your import, you have to edit the <dbname>.sql script so
that the correct extent sizes and locklevels are in effect. You cannot chang
the first extent size of the system catalog tables but you can ALTER NEXT SIZE
on them, do this at the beginning of the script just before the first tables is
created.
Of course, the recommendation from the Informix consultant is valid also.
It is seldom the case that too many extents require immediate fixing, the
biggest problem may be performance degradation so TAKE YOUR TIME, read
carefully and only then address the problem.
Hope This Helps,
