Common uses I can recall hearing of for this kind of capability: (1) One secondary current (for 'normal' failover), plus one secondary with delayed replay (for errant transaction protection). (2) One local secondary for more convenient failover, plus a remote secondary for less convenient site failure protection. (3) One or more reporting servers plus a failover server. I guess the idea is the reporting servers have different config and/or performance from the failover (maybe asynch vs synch), and they also may be located in different places for some localization benefit to the reporting apps. Potentially useful also if the failover secondary can't handle reporting load for some reason, or if the version of the technology in use requires freezing the standby in order to do reporting (e.g., Oracle DataGuard physical standby).
