TIME INC. SELECTS INFORMIX-ONLINE DYNAMIC SERVER AS DATABASE FOR DIGITIZED PHOTO LIBRARY Application To Grow to Terabytes With Informix's Support of SMP and MPP Computers MENLO PARK, Calif. (May 22, 1995) -- Informix Software, Inc., (NASDAQ: IFMX) the leading provider of parallel processing database technology, today announced that Time Inc., the publishing subsidiary of TimeWarner, Inc., has selected Informix database technology to build a digitized photo library based on INFORMIX(R)-OnLine Dynamic Server(TM). The application will provide faster and easier access and retrieval of Time Inc.'s vast collection of news photos, some of which date back to the turn of the century, and become an integral part of the production cycle of Time Inc. magazines such as Time, Entertainment Weekly, Fortune, Life, Money, People, and Sports Illustrated. The application will require the scanning and digitizing of several hundredthousand photos from Time Inc.'s 22 million hard copy archive into the Informix database, along with categorizing and indexing the photos. The digitized photo libary is expected to reach 500 gigabytes by the end of this year and grow to the tens of terabytes using future versions of Informix's Dynamic Scalable Architecture(TM) (DSA) family of products with enhanced multimedia capabilities. Once the photos are digitized, users will be able to search for photos electronically, broadening the accessibility of the photographic material and dramatically shortening the time it takes to incorporate the photos into the magazine production process. The application, which replaces a manual process, will make photos easily available first to Time Inc.'s internal users, and ultimately external users worldwide. The system currently runs on one Sun Sparccenter 2000 with eight processors, taking advantage of OnLine Dynamic Server version 7.1's Symmetric mulitprocessing (SMP) capabilities. It will initially support 300 users at Time Inc.'s magazines. The company intends to move to massively parallel processing (MPP) hardware systems and Informix's database product for MPP. "Informix offered us a viable solution with its support of multiprocessinghardware and the ability to scale to terabytes," said Thomas Smith, director of technology at Time Inc.'s editorial services division. "We have taken advantage of SMP with version 7.1, based on Informix's Dynamic Scalable Architecture, and look forward to future releases of DSA to further enhance parallel load, indexing and query capabilities." "Informix is pleased to provide Time Inc. with the technology to support all data types, including the low-, medium-, and high-resolution photos Time Inc. will now have available on-line," said Daja Phillips, marketing manager for imaging and workflow at Informix. "Informix has provided BLOB storage capabilities since 1990, and with future versions of DSA, Time will be able to extend those capabilities to massively parallel processing systems as the application grows in size."
