: In the 7.1 Informix guide to SQL: Syntax, page 1-467, it specifies that SET
: LOCK MODE TO WAIT <seconds> is available, however only for OnLine. I do not

SET LOCK MODE TO WAIT x {seconds} has existed in all the versions of OnLine
(don't know about Turbo -- I'm too young ;)
The reason it's not in the 4.0 4GL manual is that, back in those days, the 4GL
and SQL manuals only documented features that were available in SE -- anything
that was specific to OnLine was only in the OnLine manual. If you look in the
4.0 OnLine manual, it's probably in there. (Jim, your memory is not playing
tricks on you :)
Jon's right -- DEADLOCK_TIMEOUT is only for networked environments. It sets a
timeout limit on distributed transactions because we cannot do deadlock
detection for remote lock requests the way we do for locking on a single
instance.
