Re: Informix: Please buy Borland

Another option is to by Symantec. They realy have to buy someone to get their tools bussiness going again. The current situation is prety bad. I actually made the suggestion to Phil White at the user conference last summer that he should buy Borland. At the time he only smiled. He do understand however that his tools bussiness is in big trouble, but I am not sure he is too interested. He have also stated that it's nearly impossible to earn money in that bussiness. There is to big a price pressure. He is of course wrong on this. His only problem is to understand volume marketing properly. Hopefully he can learn, or someone can tell him. I am not sure any longer that Borland is the right company to buy. They have lost a lot of talent lately, and talent is the key issue in this bussiness. May be Symantec is a better option. Their Visual Cafe Java development tool looks *very* good, and it's available now. They also don't have the baggage of dBase, Paradox and other products (although they do have a C/C++ compiler which is hardly something for Informix). I am also sorry to say Kerry, that I doubt Delphi is all that interesting any longer with Java coming allong so strongly. May be you can tell me I am wrong. There are good arguments for having tools to make true MS Windows programs. It would of course be nice if Informix could snapp Borland out of Oracle's hold. It would be very negative for Informix if Oracle bought them. Oracle would be able to make a marketing case out of owning Borland, and it would effectively destroy Delphi as a serious tool for development against Informix databases. It seems there are a number of Delphi users with Informix databases. kerry@kcbbs.gen.nz (Kerry Sainsbury) wrote: :Borland have just announced they are chopping 30% of their staff. :Things don't sound well :-( :"Industry Analysts" think Borland may be making itself attractive to :a take-over by the highest bidder. : :Informix: Start bidding. :Your databases are great, but your PC tools would get a huge boost if you :could make use of Borland's talent. : :You wouldn't even have to build "J-Works" from the ground up, instead take :Borland's "Latte" (J-Builder now). : :Well, *I* think it'd be a nice marriage.
