I received this from IBM in February this year in response to a similar question on licensing: "...IDS 9.3 & 9.4 High Availability/Failover In idle standby or active standby, you must acquire the correct number of Server, Processor and Concurrent Session use authorizations: - In idle standby: (1) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server Workgroup Edition, you must acquire an additional Server use authorization for the idle standby Server. (2) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server Enterprise Edition Unlimited, you must acquire an additional use authorization for one Processor on the idle standby Server. (3) No additional Concurrent Session use authorizations need to be acquired for the idle standby Server, because, during the failover, the use authorizations for Concurrent Sessions on the failed Server apply to the use on the idle standby Server. - In active standby: (1) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server Workgroup Edition, you must acquire an additional Server use authorization for the active standby Server and the number of Concurrent Session use authorizations required for that Server before the failover. (2) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server Enterprise Edition Unlimited, you must acquire a Processor use authorization for each of the processors attached or available to the active standby Server. (3) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server Enterprise Edition, you must acquire the number of Concurrent Session use authorizations required for the active standby Server before the failover. During the failover, the authorizations for Concurrent Sessions on the failed Server may apply to use on the active standby Server. For example, if there are use authorizations for 30 Concurrent Sessions on the failed Server, and for 20 Concurrent Sessions on the active standby Server, during the failover, all 50 Concurrent Sessions may be authorized on the active standby Server. Version 7.x High Availability/Failover In idle standby or active standby, you must acquire the correct number of Server, Processor and Concurrent Session use authorizations: - In idle standby: (1) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server 7 Workgroup Edition, you must acquire an additional Server use authorization for the idle standby Server. (2) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server 7 Enterprise Edition Unlimited, you must acquire an additional use authorization for one Processor on the idle standby Server. (3) No additional Concurrent Session use authorizations need to be acquired for the idle standby Server, because, during the failover, the use authorizations for Concurrent Sessions on the failed Server apply to the use on the idle standby Server. - In active standby: (1) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server 7 Workgroup Edition, you must acquire an additional Server use authorization for the active standby Server and the number of Concurrent Session use authorizations required for that Server before the failover. (2) For the IBM Informix Dynamic Server 7 Enterprise Edition Unlimited, you must acquire a Processor use authorization for each of the processors attached or available to the active standby Server. From IBM's site (reference below): One area: Informix Dynamic Server V9.4 Workgroup Edition features and attributes include: High availability Point-in-time instance wide restore Table level backup and recovery XBSA support for easy integration of third-party backup tools Supports high-availability clustering solutions Lower down: Function limitations - You may not use the following functions of the program: parallel data query, data partitioning, parallel backup, parallel restore, parallel load, parallel unload, optical disks, Enterprise Replication (ER), High Availability Data Replication (HDR), VML (ability to access more than two GB RAM). Why advertise that it "Supports high-availability clustering solutions" and then say that HDR (Informix's high availability clustering) is restricted? Our salesman told us that we could use HDR, provided that we purchase an additional license for the redundant server... It would be helpful to quote in evidence should IBM ever question this. thanks Neil
