Question on data base replication
Posted in 1995
I am considering the use of data base replication facilities to bring multiple data bases at different physical locations consistent. It would be very much appreciated that anyone can advise me whether it is reliable and with good performance to make use of this facility for my application. Requirements are : I have twelve locations; each with data base to record personal records installed. The business nature is such that a person has record at one location does not have record at the other. But it might be possible that the person may go to other location to perform transaction, in which case reference and update to the record at his / her original location is required. Application logic can of course be written that messages or RPC be sent to the location to get or update the information. But it is required to update all location with the result of the transaction which implies sending updates to all other 11 locations. Informix has data base replication features, as some other relational data base do. However, I don't know the effectiveness in this situation and wether it is appropriate to use or not. I would certainly be great if I can simply update the data at the local data base and rely on the replication to reflect the changes to all other 11 locations. The frequency of having the cross location transaction is rare and may amount to several percent of the total number of transactions. Can replication work effectively for 12 data base ? Thanks in advance. Terence
