Some Pointers for a DBA "to be"

I have just taken a job were I will be training to be the Informix DBA. I am looking for some direction on what I should start learning first. We will be running Baan IV w/Informix Online 7.23 on an R/S 6000 running AIX Unix. I have no experience as a DBA. Currently all my experience is with NT Server as a LAN Admin. And I have just taken the Intro to Tools for Baan. Do I need to learn programming or is learning SQL enough? What will my day to day tasks be? Are there any books I need to buy? ( I have "The AIX Survival Guide" ) Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! In addition to the very valuable advice already posted, picking up some good SQL, Triggers and Stored Procedure Language are a must. SQL will be a very powerful ali in interogating the SMI tables as well as general system tables, and triggers & SPL will provide you with flexibility to do some effective script writing and monitoring. Another book which wasn't listed, is Informix Unleashed which provides details and a variety of Informix servers, tools and utilities. Well if you have no background in Relational Database theory or Data Modeling theory. All the Informix / Baan / whatever classes will not do you alot of good when the programmmers and managers start asking you to do "stupid" things. Get the book "Data Modeling for Information Professionals". It is a must have for anyone working with data in any fashion. At amazon.com or any bookstore. jwright@numatics.com wrote in message <772qhv$498$1@nnrp1.dejanews.com>... >I have just taken a job were I will be training to be the Informix DBA.
