Re: ITS Woes
Posted in 2007
Paul Watson hit problems exporting/importing a 10.FC6 database using the TimeSeries DataBlade: dbexport/dbimport kept failing, with support only suggesting re-initialising the instance. One suggestion was to drop the -ss option on dbexport (which had fixed a similar Spatial DataBlade case), another to unregister the blade and keep the DDL separately. Paul's actual fix was simply to hand-edit the SQL dbexport generated, correcting some casts. Others urged him to escalate the bug with IBM; a support contact said escalation was under way, but no IBM fix is recorded in the thread.

Thanks for that, it turned out that the dbexport SQL is incorrect, just
neede to correct some of the castings. However I do find it
unacceptable that when you have datablades installed especailly the IBM
ones that the dbexport/dbimport fails so regularly
AND please nobody tell me to raise a bug cos I'm always told it works
when I try :-) :-)

I can't resist, Paul. Please take the time and escalate this issue. Unfortunately, there probably isn't a lot of depth at IBM in first or second line support with regards to the datablade technology and the OR capabilities of IDS. So when you report the bug, the person on the other end probably isn't validating the problem in a datablade or OR enabled environment. ESCALATE! This is important, differentiating technology in IDS that isn't getting the attention it deserves. And it won't get the attention it needs unless folks such as yourself escalate things at IBM. You can escalate at anytime simply by telling the support engineer that the issue needs to be escalated.. Paul, Christine, I have worked with David Jay at IBM Support regarding Datablade problems; he has been very helpful. Mike Badar ESRI 1 International Ct. BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!! do not give up!!!!
Scottishpoet: do something!!!!!!!
and yes you could see a bug or a problem or...example...
if you try to dbexport a database with excalibure text installed in
your hosed
afaikr this is a known bug.
W.a. is grab all the sql (create indexes etc ) unregister the blade,
then dbexport....
The problem was/is there is stuff stored in sbspaces which is not
correct anymore.....
AND one has to do logged imports causing long trx.
sounds like the same is applicable for timeseries.
Have at least a bug filed and ask for a descent workaround.
Superboer.

The timeseries was an easy fix, just edited the SQL to correct the SQL
the dbexport creates.

Well I was around the UK Support office last week and had a face to
face meeting with Chris Beaney (UK Support Manager) and
almost ALL the support team in the UK.
If they refuse to escalate tell me the PMR number and the issue. I'll
go around to their offices and wack them hard, I know where they work!
I suspect they are not escalating as they cannot reproduce it so send
me more info (e.g. PMR number, symptoms etc). and I'll sort it!
PS I was told Paul Brown is the Timeseries guy at IBM, he practially
wrote it!
Our main user of Timeseries told us that there is no supported way to
move from Solaris to Linux. So dbexport can unload Timseries data?
What if you have Tbs of Timeseries data and many dbspaces hence many
containers. Can you unload each Timeseries container in parallel?
Also I heard that if you have more than one Timeseries container per
dbspace you cannot get I/O going on more than one container in a
single dbspace
at the same time. IBM say you can but they are wrong (???) Is this
true?
David.
The Informix support organisation in EMEA has a lot of experience with the datablades. I don't believe anybody has refused to escalate anything. Scottishpoet is now working with Paul's support provider reagrding this situation.
