Remote Connections

Can someone tell me what steps the engine (ODS 7.24 on Solaris 2.x) uses to determine if another user/machine is allowed connection? For some reason, when I connect the hostname is in all caps, and therefore does not get resolved because they are listed in the rhost files as lower case. I have another server that is set up the same way, and the name comes in lower case. Where is it getting the upper case from? I am not using DNS.
