ifxclone
Posted in 2013
Nate couldn't get ifxclone to work, first hitting "INFORMIXSERVER does not match DBSERVERNAME or any of the DBSERVERALIASES" — self-solved by running ifxclone on the target rather than the source. The clone then worked, but RSS updates lagged badly (minutes per single-row update). Suggestions: DELAY_APPLY (confirm it's set on the RSS, not the primary), slow/dirty network link, buffered logging (his was unbuffered), and setting RSS_FLOW_CONTROL to -1 to disable flow control. IBM support suggested opening a PMR; no confirmed fix is recorded.

I'm trying to do some testing with ifxclone but can't seem to get it to work. I've tried everything I can think of with it and I'm stuck. I can't get it to work correctly. ifxclone -L -T -S source -I source.IP -P 8785 -t target -i target.IP -p 8587 -d RSS Restoring clone server robin from source server source. Look at online log for status of clone server... INFORMIXSERVER does not match DBSERVERNAME or any of the DBSERVERALIASES. FAILED WARNING: server initialization failed, or possibly timed out (if -w was used). Check the message log, online.log, for errors. sqlhost as far as I can tell is correct. They're in a group(not 100% sure if that's necessary but I assumed).
Is that the EXACT command line you used or a mock-up? What are the DBSERVERNAME and DBSERVERALIASES settings for the original and new servers? Art Art S. It was a mock up just dropped the server names and IPs for simplicity... ifxclone -L -T -S nate_shm -I source.IP -P 8785 -t robin -i target.IP -p 8587 -d RSS This is from the sqlhosts file. g_robin group - - i=260 nate_shm onsoctcp sd19 8587 g=g_robin robin onsoctcp sd36 8785 g=g_robin I got it to clone(always helps if you're running it on the target not the source) but it doesn't appear that RSS is working(or not updating the secondary in any timely manner). It's taking about a minute or so it seems to update one row. Should it be faster?
Actually it looks like quite a bit more than a minute.
Unless you have DELAY_APPLY set to a significant delay or your network pipe to the secondary is VERY slow or VERY dirty, the updates should keep up with little noticeable delay. Art Art S. DELAY_APPLY 0
It's just an empty stores_demo database with one row in customer that I'm
updating. I don't think it'll be dirty.

If it's buffered then I don't think you see the changes on the RSS node until the logical log buffer is flushed, although I think if a buffer doesn't fill in a time period we might force a flush. So if you have a buffered logging database, that could be why you are seeing the delay to your RSS? Jacques Renaut IBM Informix Advanced Support APD Team
Not dirty data, a dirty network comm line to the secondary.

It is unbuffered. So I'm still at a loss.
I can make a single row update of less than 1k transfer with LOGBUFF set at 128k instantaneous. Use RSS_FLOW_CONTROL and set it to -1. You probably have flow control turned on...this will delay the applies...read up on it. The default value is 0, which is 8 times the LOGBUFF size... -1 allows for log wraps, but it also turns off flow control, so you have instant copies. Make sure you have lots of log space though...
Also, make sure DELAY APPLY is set on the RSS, not the Primary. (I've made that mistake before)
Original post: It is unbuffered. So I'm still at a loss. Response: Well, I would say that isn't normal, but if it's not a buffered database, and not a bad network connection between servers, and not delayed apply turned on on the RSS node, then off the top of my head, I'm not sure what else it could be. I guess I would say to open up a PMR on it if you can. Jacques Renaut IBM Informix Advanced Support APD Team
