Well, if we're gettin' picky, TFM says ya have to start with a number greater than 0. So, the max value for serial (which was the original question, I think) is 2,147,483,647 or (2^31)-1, (in base 10, 1111111111111111111111111111111 binary, 17777777777 octal, 7FFFFFFF hex .... *slap*.... whew, thanks, I'll be ok now!) I like giving them the invoices, too :) Paul watson wrote: > > >Jeez, you obviously aren't a consultant where I am...or maybe your maths is > >just bad... :-) > > No definitely not, I like to give solutions to a client, not invoices <g> > > > > Depends where the implied paranthesis is I suppose :-)) I always > >thought the limit was (2^31) (or 2^(32-1) if you prefer) , ie 2G not 4G > > >Well, it actually spans a 2^32 -1 range, from -2^31 to +2^31 (provided you > >start it off at -2^31) > > I take it there is an implied base here ie 10 , but that's just me being picky > > > > >Picky, picky, picky... :-) > > What was the original question ??? However, you can explicitly insert negative values into a serial column if you wish to. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>
