Re: CKPT REQ - Blocked:CKPT

The log does not record the checkpoint yet because it has not begun, as the
onstat banner says, the checkpoint is blocked. There can be several causes for
a blocked checkpoint but the most common is that your logical log files are full
and need to be backed up. The checkpoint must record itself in the logical
logs which it cannot do if the logs are full. Check out onstat -l if none of
your logical logs has a 'B' in the third position of the 'flags' column
(actually if LBU_PRESERVE is set to one you may have one log that is marked 'B'
and still be blocked, this is good) and the current log ('C' in flag position 5)
is at 100% this is the problem. Unless you have LBU_PRESERVE set to 1 in your
ONCONFIG file you may be hosed, but the only possible fix is to try to shutdown
the engine, set LBU_PRESERVE to zero (0) if it is 1, set LTAPEDEV to /dev/null,
and restart the engine. This MAY cause the engine to discard all of the full
logical logs and free them up for reuse. If this works you should immediately
do several things:
1-Shutdown again and set LBU_PRESERVE to 1 and LTAPEDEV to your normal backup
device
2-Restart the instance and immediately take a level 0 archive
3-Check out your logical log archive procedures and fix them so this cannot
happen again
If this all does not work the only option is to call IBM tech support and ask
them to truncate the last logical log file so you can archive the logical logs
and free them for reuse which you cannot do with the logs all full since the
archive process needs to note its passing in the logs as well. This may cause
some minor data loss but it's your last resort beyond restoring the last
archives and rolling forward the logical log backups you have not been making.
