RE: char vs. varchar

I feel it is neccesary for a good programmer to understand at least the basics of everything he deals with. Otherwise he is not able to cosider the implications of his actions. Sometimes not even able to comprehend them. Working at a higher level of abstraction does not excuse a programmer from taking the time to understand the underlying structure when it is critical. In other words, I do blame them. Hopefully they can learn. Will P.S. There are many bad decisions for which I am to blame. Nothing wrong with that as long as I recognize my mistake and try not to do it in the future. >===== Original Message From Sujit.Pal@bankofamerica.com ===== >OTC > >Just FYI, all you need to do in Java to trim a string is say... > >stringvar.trim() > >Compare this to 4GL or SQL, where you would say TRIM(stringvar). > >What does tend to happen is that Java programmers typically dont care much about >underlying data structures in the database, until they are forced to, like the >above instance.
