When you've completed offloading the Informix files from your media to the hard-disk (using cpio or tar or whatever), you will find some instructions on suggested kernel parameter values in the release notes that accompany the software. These may be found in the directory $INFORMIXDIR/release. Search all files that do not have the word DOC in their name, e.g. SERVERS_7.1, SERVERS_5.1, etc. I do not have OnLine installed here, and even if I did, I don't know what version you have so I can't give you the exact name, but I'm sure you will find those values in there. Don't be too hasty in your decision. IMHO, Informix engines are the most efficient (when well tuned) of the Big 3 vendors, and are well worth your evaluation. Even if the market share doesn't show it.... If you're not going to store multimedia data, or access multiple databases in the same query, or use replication, or need top-of-the-line fault tolerance or transaction processing, and interested in low administrative burdens (aside from archiving and restoring) then check out Informix-SE.
