I assume this means you have the SE (Standard Engine) product. SE needs a separate listener running on the server to take requests from other clients on the network. This is $INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexecd. Checkout the Linux FAQ and manuals for more details. Yes you do have to have the same entries on the client in /etc/services, /etc/hosts, and $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts and have the environment variables INFORMIXDIR and INFORMIXSERVER set appropriately. Just copy the sqlhosts entries from the server's file and you can use the sesoctcp entry for INFORMIXSERVER. Also copy the service definitions used in sqlhosts into the /etc/services file. So if an entry of: my_server sesoctcp server_host sqltcp then INFORMIXSERVER=my_server and there should be a line in /etc/hosts like: 12.13.14.15 server_host and in /etc/services like: sqltcp 1526/tcp that matches the corresponding entry on the server.
