Ifx 32 or 64 bit
Posted in 2006
Doris asked whether moving from AIX 4.3.2/IDS 7.30 to a 64-bit AIX 5.3 machine would break her Informix applications, i.e. can a 32-bit IDS run on a 64-bit OS. Answers: on HP-UX a 32-bit instance runs fine on a 64-bit OS, and 64-bit is preferable for larger shared memory; client apps over TCP/IP see no difference, while local apps must either be rebuilt with the 64-bit SDK or connect via onsoctcp using a separately installed 32-bit SDK (own INFORMIXDIR, LD_LIBRARY_PATH). One poster insisted AIX and IDS bit-levels must match, giving 'bootinfo -K' to check the kernel mode and bosboot commands to switch AIX between 32- and 64-bit. No single definitive conclusion was agreed.

Actually we are running on AIX 4.3.2 with IDS 7.30.UC6. (To be upgraded to IDS 10.00.UC4 by the end of the year) We soon will migrate our applications to a new computer with AIX 5.3. but it will be 64 bit. Will this cause trouble for our Informix applications? (It is installed this way on a test system and seems to run) Thanks, Doris
Hi Doris, I've posted approxmative the same question a few months ago on this forum. Andreas Kutsche answered this : "" 64bit should be the preferred version because you don't have any limitations on shared memory usage (buffers, locks, shared memory). All applications connecting over the network (e.g. PCs) don't see any difference when connecting to 32 or 64 bit - nothing needs to be done here. If you have applications on the database machine you have to possibilities: - migrate your application to 64bit (compile with 64bit and 64bit-SDK) - connect over TCP/IP (e.g. sqlhosts on HPUX: onsoctcp) and if you don't already use the shared connect libraries from the 32bit SDK set INFORMIXDIR and SHLIB_PATH/LD_LIBRARY_PATH explicitly to the SDK. Remember: You should install the SDK to a different INFORMIXDIR than the server - but that rule applies to 32bit only installations, too. Bye Andreas Kutsche "" I hope this is clear enough, good luck, Yves -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] Sent: 20 October 2006 09:27 To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Ifx 32 or 64 bit [7653] Actually we are running on AIX 4.3.2 with IDS 7.30.UC6. Hi Doris, What I understand is that you are running AIX 4.3 (32-Bit) with IDS 7.3 (32-Bit) and applications that you are running are also compiled on 32-Bit SDK. Now you are planning to move on to new servers with AIX 5.3 and IDS 10 (32-Bit) but the applications with remain same i.e. on 32-Bit. AIX and IDS must be on same architecture i.e AIX 32-Bit with IDS 32-Bit OR AIX 64-Bit with IDS 64-Bit. Otherwise there will be no problem with AIX but IDS will not work. You will have to check the AIX on your new servers that whether it is running on 32-Bit or 64-Bit. And you can do it by using following commands: To check in which mode AIX is try this with root user: #bootinfo -K result will be 32 or 64 If it 32 then you will have no problem but if it is 64, try this and restart the machine: ######################## ## AIX 64-Bit to 32-Bit ## ######################## ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp /unix ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_mp /usr/lib/boot/unix lslv -m hd5 bosboot -ad /dev/ipldevice shutdown -Fr Just for the information of other IIUG friends, here is the code for AIX 32-Bit to 64-Bit conversion ######################## ## AIX 32-Bit to 64-Bit ## ######################## ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_64 /unix ln -sf /usr/lib/boot/unix_64 /usr/lib/boot/unix lslv -m hd5 bosboot -ad /dev/ipldevice shutdown -Fr I hope this will resolve your problem. Hi,
indeed I'm sorry, I misread the question.
On AIX5.3 64-bit OS should run IDS (64-bit) 10.00.FC4
Running 32-bit application on 64-bit IDS, see below=20
