SCO IPC

OK - I've RTFMed, but still in need of help.
I am running SCO Unix 5.0.{245}, with Informix IDS.2000 Dynamic Server.
Trying to initialize shared memory does not appear to work. The system
utility "ipcs" does not report any shared memory being allocated, and
the oninit -i seems just to hang.
SCO's idea of shared memory is a little complicated. Perhaps I should
just turn shared memory off completely ? (How?) Any suggestions ?
Does anyone happen to have Informix running on such an OS, and have any
advice to offer ?
Thanks !

OK you tried, anyway.
IDS works fine on SCO, there are thousands of installations all using
shared memory, indeed IDS NEEDS shared memory to work at all.
o Did you read the release notes ($INFORMIXDIR/release/*/*/ONLINE_9.2
for OS kernel build parameters needed by the engine? You may have
to build a new kernel with the listed parameters set to AT LEAST
the values shown there.
o Have you booted the new kernel?
o Did you try oninit -i -v to see the verbose mode messages? Post
them.
o Post your ONCONFIG file and a listing of appropriate disk
files/devices being referenced there (ie: ROOTPATH).
o Post number of CPUs, amount of RAM, etc. from your system config.
We'll try to help now.

Yep.

Shucks. That does surprise me. It can handle pipes, so I'm
not sure why it can't use pipes exclusively. Oh, well. Not
mine to reason why.

Actually, they were in the file IDS_9.21

The last thing it says is "Allocating and attaching to shared memory".
There is where it just hangs.

It does create the (cooked) file that I specify.

4 CPU, 256 mb RAM.

Thanks. You have helped a lot already. I now am sure that I have
an OS problem.

Need shared memory to put the shared data structures, like locks,
the buffer cache, logical and physical log buffers, etc that all of
the oninit processes need to share access to. Otherwise you would
have to have a single caching process and make a request for a page
by writing a message to a pipe and wait for the page-manager to push
the data back down the pipe. Inherently too slow! With shared memory
all of the CPU VPs and AIO VPs and threads get access to all of the
buffers and other data structures concurrently (as much as access
control will permit anyway).

D%*& forgot they renamed the ONLINE* notes files to IDS* when 7.3x
came out. But you found it.

As you say. Let up know the upshot.
