An experience I had here is the following: Last year I negotiated a deal for 75 386's with Informix SE-RTI and RDS-RTI. Although the purchase price was negotiable the maintenance was not. It worked out that after a few years I would have paid the (discounted) purchase price in full again on maintenance charges. The feature set I needed for those few years (and a bit longer) was all provided for in 4.1, so it worked out cheaper to not take maintenance and in a few years (plus a bit) buy the then current version.
