Hi,
Recently i have installed IBM_IBM INFORMIX-SQL_7.32.FC2_HPUX_PVU_ML 64 bit SQL
binaries in Informix Dynamic Server_9.40.FC5W2_HPUX_PVU_ML. The informix
instances were up and running after installation, but after the server reboot
i am unable to bring up the instances. Below is the error throwing :-
Starting instance xyz.....Cannot find message file. Check INFORMIXDIR and
DBLANG.FAILED
Running onmode -F to free-up memory...OK
Starting instance abc .....Cannot find message file. Check INFORMIXDIR and
DBLANG.FAILED
Running onmode -F to free-up memory...OK
Starting instance qwe .....Cannot find message file. Check INFORMIXDIR and
DBLANG.FAILED
Running onmode -F to free-up memory...OK
Below is the logs from the message logfile :-
13:13:37 Event alarms enabled. ALARMPROG = '/users/informix9/etc/no_log.sh'
13:14:29 IBM Informix Dynamic Server Started.
13:14:29 shmctl: errno = 1
13:14:29 Shared memory segment 0xc000000000419000 could not be forced resident.
Please help me out.

Did you install the SQL in the same directory as the Engine ?? If so you
will need to re-install the engine to have the correct file in place. The
rule for installation (if everything is in the same directory) is TEN
(Tools first (SQL, 4GL), Engine next (Dynamic Server) and Network Last (not
always relevant and not in your case). Installing in separate directories
is much preferred as it allows either to be upgraded independently of the
other, but your answer I believe will be to re-install the engine.

Thanks Keith, Is there any other workaround to keep the existing instances and corresponding databases? Does creating a new mount point for installing IDS as the INFORMIXDIR could help (with onconfig file, sqlhosts, etc) from old directory? Regards, Sameer
There are several versions of the engine and the tools that are not
compatible at the library level and the engine has to be installed in a
separate INFORMIXDIR than the tools (ie ISQL and C4GL/R4GL). You will have
to reinstall the engine software to overwrite the damage done by the tool
installation. If you don't have the installation package any longer, then
either copy all files from another server or restore the INFORMIXDIR from
an archive taken before you installed the ISQL package.
Once that's done and you engine is back online, you can install ISQL again
into a different directory. ISQL clients will have to set INFORMIXDIR to
the ISQL installation rather than the engine's installation. You can use
the INFORMIXSQLHOSTS environment variable to point to the original sqlhosts
file for those clients or copy or link it into the ISQL's INFORMIXDIR/etc.

Sameer You will not lose any instance/database by re-installing, it only overwrites the Informix code in the install directory. I would recommend copying your sqlhosts and config files somewhere safe as well as termcap if they are in this directory, but apart from that just install. Or even better, restore your Informix directory from a filestore backup taken before the ISQL install and then install ISQL in a separate directory.
