Slow Query time

Hi, We are running INFORMIX-OnLine Version 7.24.UC2 on a Sun Ultra Enterprise 2. We are using cold fusion to connect to Informix database to run SQL queries. It takes about 2 min. or so to run a query that has about 10,000 fields. When we run queries, our CPU(only one, running at 300 mhz) is busy, close to 98%. Can some one help me figure out why it is taxing the system so much and how to speed up query time? Right now, only one person at a time is running the queries and if the second person tries to run a query, it takes about 4 min. for the query to be done. Please excuse me if I did not give enough data to help answer the problem, as I am Intern and I am learning as I go along. Thank you in advance and for your time, Raj.
